Sundance 2014

The first time I ever went to the festival was in 2005 with my dad and sister. I remember my dad telling me he was buying us all tickets to this festival in Utah where we were going to watch a bunch a movies I've never heard of.  I wasn't sure what to expect but I was down for the adventure.

We arrived in this beautiful little ski town on this Dr. Seuss type mountain past Salt Lake City. There was a ski lift picking up people right off of Main Street taking them up to this big ski run, I'd never seen anything like it.  The atmosphere was electric, it was buzzing with industry, celebrities and film lovers. I was hooked.

After a seven year break, I was finally able to take my husband and his Aunt and Uncle with me. I was ecstatic to share this wonderful experience with more loved ones, as well as to see awesome movies!

Here's what we watched and my opinions:

1) "Life After Beth" - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2581244/

This movie was hilarious, I am huge fan of Aubrey Plaza as well as Molly Shannon and John C. Reily. It's a fun story about a boy's girlfriend who dies from a snake bite and comes back as a zombie. You question what kind of zombie she's going to be because she looks normal and acts normal....at least for a while :-) The only down side about this film is that they leave a lot of question unanswered for the audience and the resolution is way too quick. You leave the theater feeling a bit cheated, but the humor almost makes up for it. We will see if this one gets picked up or not.

 2) "Little Accidents" - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3125220/?ref_=nv_sr_1

This one borderlines the typical Sundance Indy film type. Depressing with long shots/scenes with very little going on. However, I have seen worse at Sundance so this one is pretty good compared to the others. I do appreciate the stories going on between multiple characters, and the great acting. I just felt sad about life after leaving the theater, maybe that was the point?

 3) "They Came Together" - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2398249/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

The director David Wain with Amy Pohler, Paul Rudd, and Max Greenfield during Q&A.

I knew once the Director came out to introduce the movie and instead asked the audience how to beat Candy Crush level 99, that is was going to be a great movie. I was surprised how well this kind of silliness was able to hold it's own and didn't make you feel like it was one big bad joke. The movie successfully made fun of every romantic comedy and it will probably be in the top ten most quoted movies ever. Needless to say, we all loved this one.

4) "Rudderless" - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1798243/

Now to the reason why Sundance exists: Rudderless. William H. Macy does such a good job capturing the other side of a tragic event. This movie really makes the audience step out of their one sided minds (including myself) and experience life in the shoes of what society would normally condemn. Wonderful wonderful storytelling, acting and editing. I left feeling so inspired to continue pursuing my dream in being a part of films like these.
